Thank You for watching! Subscribe me! Did you know that the climactic battle at the Black Gate in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King was filmed in the Rangipo Desert, a site in New Zealand formerly used by the New Zealand Army for weapons testing? Prior to filming, an officer demonstrated to the cast and crew the different types of explosives they might find in the area and what to do if they found them. Although the soldiers had checked an area for the scene, they could not guarantee that potentially active weapons would not be present. During filming, Karl Urban spotted the fins of a bomb sticking out of the ground. As a result, the army had to constantly clear the area of any bombs that were found. Filming was dangerous and unpredictable. Orlando Bloom described the experience as "doing a fight sequence that shook the earth with all of us running around and jumping up and down. Despite the risks, the filmmakers were able to capture an epic battle scene that is one of the most memorable moments in the movie.
